Directing a data blockbuster for the BFI

Challenge: Delivering critical publications

The background

Founded in 1933, the British Film Institute combines cultural, creative and industrial roles to champion all aspects of the British film industry within the UK and internationally.

Every year the BFI publish their Statistical Yearbook. This delivers the most comprehensive picture of the film industry in the UK and records the performance of British films abroad. We help the BFI to obliterate indifference to the British film industry as this critical document inspires media coverage, influences government policy, underpins educational initiatives and supports marketing efforts in the domestic market and abroad.

The brief

At 272 pages, creating this publication is an appropriately epic production – too much for the BFI’s in-house studio.

Our challenge is to expedite the publication process and remain strictly on budget. We have to adhere to tight production schedules to meet rigid publication deadlines – at the same time we need to guarantee that all the statistical data is presented error-free and that the look and feel of the document is in keeping with the BFI’s visual identity guidelines.

What we did

  • Overall design and layout styling
  • Development of templates and style sheets
  • Layout of all pages
  • Transposition of spreadsheet data into tables and charts
  • Digital publication of individual chapters
  • Collation of final digital document
  • Creation of online ‘page-turner’ edition

As the flagship statistical publication from the BFI that delivers much needed data to the entire domestic and international film industry – published data needs to be 100% correct.

The interval – time for eye candy

This is a data rich document, so to give the reader some visual respite – and to assist in the navigation of such a long document – the start of every chapter is clearly signposted with a still from a current British film and a top line info-graphic summary.
